About the Course
This course addresses the growing challenge of designer drugs in toxicology. Taught by forensic toxicologist Jolene Bierly, it provides law enforcement with essential tools to identify the effects, appearance, and packaging of popular designer drugs. The course will cover how these substances, mimicking traditional drugs, pose significant public safety risks due to impaired driving. It will also delve into advanced drug testing methodologies, including immunoassay, LC-TOF MS, and GCMS/LCMS MS confirmation, and discuss the prevalence and impact of various designer drug classes like stimulants, opioids, benzodiazepines, and cannabinoids in driving investigations.

Jolene Bierly
Jolene J. Bierly, MSFS, D-ABFT-FT, is a highly experienced Forensic Toxicologist currently serving at NMS Labs in Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, a role she has held since May 2017. In this capacity, she applies her expertise in advanced analytical techniques such as Liquid-Liquid Extractions, Solid Phase Extractions, and LC-MS/MS, alongside maintaining and troubleshooting complex instruments.
Prior to her current position, Jolene was a Forensic Scientist I with the New York State Police in Albany from May 2013 to May 2017. Her earlier tenure at NMS Labs included a role as a Laboratory Support Specialist II from May 2011 to May 2013, following a valuable Toxicology Internship where she performed sample preparation, instrumental analysis, and drug research in an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory. Her foundational experience also includes working as a Laboratory Analyst at West Pharmaceutical Services, where she conducted microbiology and environmental testing.
