About the Course

Nearly 48 million Americans have some degree of hearing loss, which means that it is critical for first responders to be culturally competent in working safely, effectively, and legally with the Deaf, Deaf-Blind, and hard of hearing communities. In this one hour course, Mike Helms covers topics such as types of hearing loss, the language and culture of the Deaf community, and practical strategies to best serve the Deaf, Deaf-Blind, and hard of hearing communities.

Mike Helms

Mike Helms, born and raised in Chattanooga, TN, graduated from Lipscomb University with a double major in Accounting and Organizational Communications. After serving on the board of directors, Mike joined the staff of Bridges for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in 2012, where he serves today as Vice President of Adult Education & Outreach. Mike has provided training to thousands of first responders across Tennessee and loves to entertain and to educate while serving and advocating for the D/deaf, Deaf-Blind, and hard of hearing communities. He currently resides in Cheatham County with his wife and daughters.
